Minor League Recap for 8/10

Notes -- Dan Meyer was knocked around a bit in Richmond, but there were solid performances from Ray Aguilar (Greenville), Chris Vines (Danville), and Johnny Venters (Orlando) further down the line.

Danville 3B Van Pope gets a mention in yesterday's Daily Dish:

Another former two-way college player, Rookie-level Danville third baseman Van Pope, is sticking to hitting and starting to get the hang of it. The former Mississippi recruit out of Meridian (Miss.) CC, who was the No. 1 prospect last summer in the Central Illinois Collegiate League, hit his third homer in six games for Danville in a 9-5 loss to Pulaski. Pope has hit safely in 18 of his last 21 games to improve to .275/.330/.444 with five homers and 25 RBIs.

Web surfer extraordinaire 50PoundHead scrounges up a link on recently signed Drew Jackson from the New Mexico JC website. Thanks 50LB!

Player of the day -- Damon Hollins (Richmond) 5-6, HR (13), RBI in doubleheader.

Richmond Braves 2, Durham Bulls 0, Game 1 --
Sam McConnell tossed five shutout innings, allowing just two hits, two walks, and five strikeouts, and the bullpen backed him with two scoreless innings as the Braves take game one over the Bulls 2-0.

RF Damon Hollins hit his 13th homer of the season - a solo shot - on a 2-for-2 night, and DH Luis Lopez added an RBI, going 2-for-4 in the victory. CF Dewayne Wise was also 2-for-4 with a triple.

McConnell moves to 7-5 for Richmond with the win. Roman Colon tossed on perfect inning of relief in the sixth, and Matt Whiteside gave up one hit in a scoreless seventh to earn his 29th save.

Additional Stats:
3B Wilson Betemit 1-3
1B James Jurries 0-4

Richmond Braves 4, Durham Bulls 5, Game 2 -- Box Score
Dan Meyer didn't have it on this night against Durham, allowing four runs on six hits, a walk, and four strikeouts in five innings as the Braves lose to the Bulls in game two of the doubleheader 5-4. Meyer gave up three homers in the contest, which makes me wonder if the blister on his finger has healed completely.

The Richmond offense banged out eleven hits, but never could catch up all the way in the run column. 3B Wilson Betemit hit his 12th homer of the season on a 2-for-4, one RBI night, and SS Jorge Velandia hit his sixth, going 1-for-2 with two RBI in the loss. RF Damon Hollins was 3-for-4 and DH Luis Lopez added a 2-for-4 night with a double.

Meyer wasn't involved in the decision, as that honor goes to Will Cunnane, who gave up one run on two hits and two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings. Cunnane falls to 1-6 with a 6.09 ERA for the R-Braves this season.

LF Napoleon Calzado was a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk in the win.

Aguilar picks up his first win in Greenville to move to 1-0 with a 2.81 ERA. Brian Langen earned his second save despite allowing one unearned run in the ninth.

Orlando Braves 0, GCL Yankees 1 -- Box Score
Johnny Venters did everything you could ask for in the start, allowing one run on four hits, a walk, and eight strikeouts in six innings, but the Yankees pitching was just too much for the Braves on this day as they lose 1-0.
