Mac on Marte

In case you missed it yesterday (sorry - I'm slow!), Mac over at Braves Journal posed the question Who is Andy Marte?

It's an excellent piece by Mac, who comes to the conclusion that Marte may be looking at a career similar to Matt Williams, which I think is a fair comparison. Williams was a five time All-Star, and was one of the top third basemen in the majors during his peak. Aside from a few .300+ seasons, Williams AVG for his career was right around league average (.268 vs .266), but it was his power that set him apart as a hitter. This seems to be the way Marte is trending so far in his minor league career.

The PECOTA forecasting system at Baseball Prospectus lists Marte's two closest comparable players as Adrian Beltre and Brooks Robinson. Williams had a higher career slugging percentage than Beltre or Robinson, but they are all still cut from similar mold.

As Mac says, I can certainly live with Matt Williams, but it doesn't hurt to hope for more, right?
