It never fails

al.com: NewsFlash - Tourists await Mount St. Helens eruption

I understand the appeal of wanting to watch something like this, really I do. But remember what happened to Pliny the Elder.

That would be new

CNN.com - Mount St. Helens has '50 percent chance' of erupting - Oct 2, 2004

Gosh, what didn't we have in the eruption back in 1980? Magma! There's a "good chance" that an eruption this time would include magma. Again, thanks loads, God.

Dammit, God, we're listening already!

CNN.com - 'Volcanic advisory' issued for Mount St. Helens - Sep 29, 2004

In the past week we've had a hurricane, an earthquake, and now a possible volcanic eruption. Next, the locusts.

Idiots all around

CNN.com - California education chief calls preschooler 'stupid dirty girl' - Jul 9, 2004

First, you have Richard Riordan, who told a 6-year-old her name Isis meant "stupid dirty girl". What kind of person says that? That's so mindblowingly dense that I have to assume that there's no malicious intent. He's not intentionally being an asshole, it's just his way.

Second, you have to give a hand to the state assemblyman who decided that anyone named "Isis" had to be black, and so scheduled a demonstration. When told that the girl was in fact white -- even blond -- he cancelled it. Now he's saying that because Riordan apologized it's time to move on. Because insulting little white girls is okay.

I'm not sure I see the difference

Yahoo! News - 'Superstar' spoofs 'Idol' 04/14/2004

The WB -- yes, the WB is still on the air! -- has a new degrading reality series in the works where... well:

Dubbed "Superstar USA," skein will take the musical talent competish format and give it a wicked twist by tossing the truly talented participants -- and rewarding the misguided souls who are clueless about being tuneless.

"These people believe they're the next pop superstar, even though they're horrible singers," Fleiss said of the show, which he's exec producing via his Telepictures-based Next Entertainment. "It's not funny seeing bad singers doing karaoke. This is about people who are clearly delusional and watching them butcher song after song."

It's the next step in public ridicule. My problem is that I've seen enough of American Idol to tell that the winners there aren't such great singers anyway.

He never changes

Schwarzenegger reportedly wooing Virgin

Typical. He's never going to get anything done if he doesn't start thinking with his brain.

Oh, wait.

Schwarzenegger reportedly wooing Virgin Airlines

Whew.

The MEChAnic

Bustamente Defends Chicano Student Group

Everything I've read makes MEChA out to be basically an ordinary targeted student group -- the Hispanic version of Hillel. Everything I've read except for polemics on right-wing blogs, that is. According to the AP piece, MEChA has never been associated with violence at all -- a far cry from the Klan. Bustamante isn't backing away for the simple reason that there's nothing to be ashamed of here. This is just a smear campaign.

CA GOP self-destructing as usual

CNN.com - Simon baits Schwarzenegger on issues - Aug. 17, 2003

Y'all remember how Davis got re-elected in the first place? Guess not. My advice for Simon is that he never "bait" anybody who can break him in half with his bare hands.

Ah, California

Poll: Voters Don't Like Davis, or Recall Effort

So, they don't like the governor. (Two-thirds of those polled have an unfavorable opinion of Davis.) But they don't want to get rid of him either. Actually, I thought that was the message of the election. They hate him, but they want to keep him anyway. Makes sense.

(Ridiculous and tedious registration required, or just use laexaminer/laexaminer like I do.)
