Sorry, Blogger dudes
I've had to block Blogspot.com domains from commenting. This is a temporary measure, but there are a bunch of spammers using Blogspot domains and until they're stopped I've got to stop them on this end. It sucks, but I'm tired of cleaning up the mess.
So, if you're commenting, you've got to remove your domain for now. And if you're trackbacking, thanks but you're stuck.
I'm going to keep the block up until next Tuesday, then see what happens when I take it off. They're usually pretty good about stopping these guys, but there have to have been more than a hundred domains involved.

Google to fight DOJ request for search records - Jan. 20, 2006
I haven't seen the filing and wouldn't understand it if I did, but my reading from the news stories is that the DOJ is full of shit. Basically, Justice is saying that they should be allowed to look at a private company's records whenever they want even if the company is not a party to any involved action and hasn't done anything illegal.

I mean, it's one thing if people can go in and edit it for jokes. It's something completely else if they find out it was created by an Alabamian. Nobody will ever take it seriously if they find that out.

If you're having comments problems...
Six Apart - ProNet - CPanel Updates Breaking Movable Type Installations
It's not my fault! For some reason, the latest version of the ubiquitous CPanel software and the current version of the nearly as ubiquitous Movable Type don't like each other. Periodically, this could lead to comments not posting. If you try posting and get a 500 error, copy your entry, refresh, and repost. If your comment just doesn't show up, it has probably been saved but won't appear until someone else comments. I think that's only happened once here, but is a problem on higher traffic sites. It's CPanel's fault.

Talk like Larssson!
Herman came up with a good idea for April Fools' Day. Two challenges:
1. Write a paragraph in the style of troll poet "Nils Ake Larsson" (as seen in this thread).
2. Explain what the hell he's talking about. He's apparently Swedish, if that helps.
Prize: the respect, or possibly fear, of your peers.

So much for the algorithms
Top sports stories right now include two on English soccer and one on skiing; the last replaces one on Formula One auto racing. This is the day after NFL football, in the midst of basketball season, and after days of wild player acquisition in baseball. This is putatively a US version of the site, though it's identical to the regular page. Nobody (for a given value of "nobody" -- there are some, but their percentages are on the same order as those of third-party Presidential voters) in the US really cares about this stuff.

Destroy all spammers
I'm working with MT 3.0 on my other site. It has its positives and its negatives. Because I'm unbelievably cheap, I doubt I'll install it here, but it works better with Mozilla and the TypeKey feature is interesting.
One of the things that I've noticed in deleting the comments spam on that site (I use MT-Blacklist here, so most of it is blocked; TypeKey saves unregistered comments for review) is that someone (the hrie@yahoo.com guy) is using a peculiar automated program that's got a random name generator. If you've got an MT site you've probably seen them, if not... Well, it generally selects from a number of common personal names and a large volume of surnames and posts a comment that is supposed to be profound but is actually stupid. But for some reason -- probably, I'd guess, because the spammer is working in Asia and is also a moron -- the names show up as family name first, as in "Smith Bob". Makes it really easy to pick them out.
