This might not be a bad thing
CNN.com - Bush: Raise fuel-efficiency standards - Apr 27, 2006
You know, if Congress doesn't let him then turn around and gut what standards are already set. But if Bush actually were to set higher gas standards -- especially on tanks SUVs -- that would keep the Democrats from having to do it later. Win-win.

I prefer to keep that in the hands of Congress. I really don't want even more authority in the hands of GWB. He's already claimed he's got the right to do virtually any damned thing he wants to with no oversight (see wiretaps).

Linkmesiter has it right. Bush isn't saying that he will actually raise CAFE standards, he is saying the he wants the authority to set what the CAFE standards are for himself without any pesky congresscritters getting in the way. In other words, he just wants to consolidate more power.
CNN's report is sloppy, flawed and fundamentally inaccurate. It's almost like they're taking their lead from Faux Newz.
