We mean America
Library of Congress Online Catalogs
This will be meaningless to most of you, but I just noticed that the Library of Congress call number for Hawaiian history is DU625. Again, meaningless, except that DU is reserved for "Oceania". States and regions of the USA and American nations other than the USA get F call numbers. So according to the Library of Congress, Hawaii isn't part of the US. Or they just haven't updated it since the 19th century, whatever.

I thought it was all geographic. The Falkland Islands get F, but under Mac Theory, shouldn't they get D something?

Doesn't it make more sense to be geographic? What if the U.S. sells Hawaii to pay back Chinese debt? Then, under Mac Theory, all the books ever written about Hawaii have to be recoded.

It's not all geographical. And Hawaii is (a) an integral part of the USA, not a colony, and (b) in the Western Hemisphere, or mostly in.

Er, All in the Western Hemisphere, please. That's fascinating, Mac. I'll have to tell my mother the retired librarian.
Yes, there is a separatist movement (of course!) out here.

"Yes, there is a separatist movement (of course!) out here."
Is it an ethnic thing?

"What if the U.S. sells Hawaii to pay back Chinese debt?"
If we sold it to Japan, I don't think would notice.

Susan, you bet it is. But it's divided (kinda like Democrats). Some want the whole state to be turned over to Hawaiians who'd then tell the military and the rest of us to leave, some just want more money from what's called "ceded lands," prime real estate that generates revenue through leases, and some have this vague idea of sovereignty similar to American Indian tribes. Google "Akaka bill" and you'll get more than you ever wanted if you follow the links around.
