Tying it in to the season

Fans of the sky illuminate problems of light pollution

When the wise men followed the star to Bethlehem, they apparently didn't have to deal with light pollution from acorn-styled street lamps along the way.

Sure, all the light is wasteful (so much just shines up for the edification of night-flying birds) but I don't think you're going to get very far complaining about how it's messing up stargazing. For one thing, most people don't realize how messed up the view of the sky is.

Maybe they oughtta tie into 9-11. That seems to work.

"These lights help terrorists identify critical American facilities and enable them to launch an even greater attack than on 9-11."

Then there's all that silly stuff, like being able to walk and drive at night safely... y'know, I get the whole light pollution thing, but isn't safety a bit more important than being able to see all the stars?

As usual, The Simpsons handled the issue nicely.
