Delusions of grandeur, actually

Railroad Park inspires grand visions

I mean, who comes up with this stuff?

Its backers want it to be to Birmingham what Central Park is to New York City: An oasis that creates a transition from the decidedly urban landscape around it into a pedestrian-friendly scene where people congregate, escape and hold special events.

Central Park!

Hm. Liked it better the first time when they called it Linn Park.

As previously discussed, this park--or, more specifically, the Bessemer-to-Birmingham line--isn't a bad idea for the sake of improving mass transit. But, sadly, pie-in-the-sky talk is a sure way to drive public sentiment (and dollars) away. Witness the Dome. And Visionland. And MAPS. And [insert latest venture here].

My favorite was Birmingham Green. I was just a little kid then, but even then I could figure out that tearing up the streets to plant a bunch of bushes wasn't going to be the spark that the city needed.
