Oh, no!

AP Wire | 09/03/2005 | Kanye West rips Bush during NBC concert

A rapper said something bad about the President! How awful! We obviously must talk about nothing else for the next six weeks, and anybody who doesn't condemn West is a race-baiting liberal commie!

The expression of Mike Myeres' (who was standing next to Kanye West) was priceless as was the surprise of Chris Tucker who suddenly found himself on camera as NBC cut away from West.

I think it is a bit overboard to say that George Bush doesn't care about black people but one does have to wonder how different the response would have if it had been Galveston, TX getting hammered by Katrina instead.

I don't think Bush doesn't care about black people. He doesn't care about anyone who isn't at least upper-middle class, and damned few of those that low. To be honest, I don't think he grasps that not everybody has three or more homes. A sufficiently wealthy black person -- such as Kanye West -- will meet his standards to be concerned about.

Maybe it's stuff like this that makes Kanye West say what he says:

At one point Friday, the evacuation was interrupted briefly when school buses pulled up so some 700 guests and employees from the Hyatt Hotel could move to the head of the evacuation line — much to the amazement of those who had been crammed in the Superdome since last Sunday.

"How does this work? They (are) clean, they are dry, they get out ahead of us?" exclaimed Howard Blue, 22, who tried to get in their line. The National Guard blocked him as other guardsmen helped the well-dressed guests with their luggage.

The story doesn't mention race but I'm willing to bet that percentage wise there was significantly more whites in the hotel than in the Superdome.

Hrm... Guess you have to put the italics thingy at the beginning of each paragraph... Care to fix that for me, Mac?

Let's assume that West's motive was truthtelling and not generating some publicity for himself. Which is the more likely outcome of his remarks?

  1. Thousands of Bush supporters are shocked to learn that Bush doesn't care about Black people.
  2. Thousands of people who might have sent in contributions change the channel. (Shame on them, but should West be given a pass?)
