All children left equally behind

City students have no choice

Test scores at Birmingham city middle schools are so bad that there won't be any transfers allowed; there's nowhere to transfer to. There are 21 middle schools; 17 failed.

Well, in case Birmingham's back-to-school slogan of "Just show up" wasn't enough, maybe they should start a follow-up with "Then Open Your Damn Books." But, keep in mind that no students fail. Under new programs failing is called "deferred success." I have a lot of complaints about public schools, but I think that there is a cultural and societal problem that needs to be solved before the schools can succeed.

Apparently, the elementary schools are doing okay. I don't know what the problem is; the administrators are blaming transfers.

Don't blame the schools. They do the best they can with what they have to work with, both in terms of funding and students. If people really want to place blame, I'd take a look at the parents. Show me a failing school and I'll show you a school where parents, for whatever reason, are largely not involved with their children's education. Ignorance and apathy breeds ignorance and apathy.
