The summer of lightning
Teen, infant killed by apparent lightning strike | ajc.com
It's almost August, so the media need a theme soon. I think this is the way to go, it's the second time two people have been killed by lightning in the south in the last week.

Yea, that shark angle came out of the gate really strong, but it began lagging when people started exercising common sense. Plus it's a little shopworn.
Lightning's fresh! Plus, it could theoretically happen to *anybody.* What with the afternoon storms being a staple of Southern summer weather, and with the late date, lightning's the safest bet for whipping up some hysteria. Now if they could just have more than one isolated incident.

We have two because it happened down in Gulf Shores about ten days ago. It's an epidemic! Soon, everyone will be walking around -- in midsummer -- wearing rubber clothes.

Ohmigod. I totally didn't know about that. My family or I could be next!
Oh, wait. Wait a minute. ::relief:: It's okay. It's okay, they have tips at the end of the article for avoiding lightning strikes. It's good to know the media's looking out for me and my family. Otherwise I would have run to the nearest tall, isolated metal object.

Also, Mac, the Register ran a piece on avoiding lightning just after that weekend strike. Useful tips, stuff you might expect, but, unfortunately the lightning striking season apparently dies down at the end of July.
And you're still more likely to get struck than bit, according to the bookies in Vegas.
We had the mini-run of heatwave stories, and tips, including my favorite: Limit exposure to heat.

I saw the Register stories, and one of the Birmingham stations led off their news with a "how to avoid being struck" bit. If this does catch on, I'll definitely institute an Electropundit category.

Looks like the News is banking another one just in case: The West Nile/mosquito thing. Let's take a look:
Pros: potentially deadly, widespread risk, children more vulnerable = increased hysteria factor, elderly more vulnerable = increased risk of audience apathy, replete with moronic "tip" possibilities.
Cons: Completely played.
Final Analysis: This bowl's been cashed. Is there enough resin to do the job? I doubt it.
