Gore = Nixon?

Al Gore seems to be setting up for running again in 2008, and he's getting some support. His career now officially parallels Richard Nixon's:

Elected to Senate while still young.
Hated by the other party but considered uncomfortably moderate by his own party's more radical members.
Two-term VPs for popular, moderate Presidents.
Stiff and awkward on TV.
Lost Presidential election as sitting VP to a guy seemingly far less qualified but who came off as more likeable.
During that campaign, lost debate even with greater command of the facts.
The popular incumbent, for whatever reason, didn't campaign for him.
The new administration starts off popular but becomes bogged down in a foreign war.
And eight years later...

Other than that, they have nothing in common. And, of course, we all know what happened to Nixon.

I've always thought of Gore equaling Nixon for years. Great to see that someone else thinks the same. All that has to happen is for the Democrats to gain seats in Congress in 2006 thanks to his campaining...

I guess The Beard is Gore's "You won't have Dick Nixon to kick around anymore" moment.

Comparing Gore to Nixon? Hasn't Nixon been kicked enough?

I've always liked Al more than pretty much 99% of the American public.

I think there's a sincere, wonkish passion to the man, an admirable dedication to civil service that's really something to be applauded. It's almost like he's spent his life preparing for the presidency, and he's just bamboozled by the fact that the rest of the country won't let him serve.

I'm not sure where all this "Gore is setting up" stuff is coming from other than a few talking heads looking for something to yammer about. Gore himself said just this past week that he is a recovering politician who is figuratively on step 9 of "12 steps to recover from public life" program and was explicit in saying that he never expects to be a candidate for public office again.

Personally, I think Al Gore would have made a helluva president. If the 9-11 attack had still occured (not a certain thing), I doubt he would have used it as a pretext for invading Iraq and I'm pretty confident that the planners of the attack (Osama who?) would not be at large four years later. When the USSC stopped the counting of votes in Florida because it might cause "irreparable harm to George Bush's claim to the presidency", it wasn't Gore that lost, it was America.

I would like to think that we can all agree that, no matter your political stripes, Al Gore running for president again would be a disaster. How much fun can it be for a Democrat to support Gore after Gore(I) and then Kerry? How much fun could it be for Republicans to beat up on a candidate so pitiful as Al? Forget the qualifications and ideology for a moment and think about the political theater. Will someone please think of those of us who consider Presidential politics a spectator sport?!

Well, there's always comedy.

AL: All the problems of the last eight years could have been avoided if the American people had just elected me. Oh, wait, they did.
