Land Of 1000 Dimwits
I have purposefully refused to comment on the latest media tempest, the case of a missing teenager on a graduation trip to Aruba. I do this even though it's in my blogging "purview"; her home in Mountain Brook is next to and maybe a half step up socioeconomically from my sometimes home of Vestavia Hills, and she was to attend the University of Alabama. I refused to get involved out of general disgust with the media horde that chooses, seemingly randomly, the story of any presentable young white woman in trouble and got hooked on this one during a slow news day a couple weeks ago. (As usual, The Poor Man has the definitive statement on this matter.) I might have commented if the story had stayed local, but I ended all plans for that when I saw it hit CNN.com's front page. I have stayed away since even though it dominated the Birmingham/Tuscaloosa news and made it difficult to find anything else to talk about.
And then, they pull me in.
Caribbean Net News: Alabama radio station blacklisting the Caribbean
Colossal nincompoops Russ and Dee Fine, who like so many more important radio wingnuts have grown increasingly deranged and self-important over the past few years, have called for a general boycott of the entire Caribbean over what they see as police failure in this case. Not just Aruba; not just Dutch colonies; the entire Caribbean, including U.S. territories.
It is clear that Russ Fine (Dee is by all accounts a tool of her husband) perceives the entire Caribbean as but an undifferentiated mass of cannibals and headhunters, an assortment of brown and black people who do not know their place in the world and who need to be taught a lesson in caring for their betters. Aruba is far on the horizon of the tiny world viewed by the Fines' tiny brains, and thus basically the same place as Jamaica, or Bermuda, or probably the Azores. Quick question, Russ: What's the official language of Aruba? No, sorry, "Spanish" is not the answer.

As if she couldn't have been kidnapped in the US? Why don't they boycott Birmingham over the disappearance of a Children's Hospital employee a couple of weeks ago? The police haven't found her either. Oh, yeah, I forgot -- she's black....
Russ and Dee are colossal idiots!

"...a general boycott of the entire Caribbean over what they see as police failure in this case. Not just Aruba; not just Dutch colonies; the entire Caribbean, including U.S. territories."
Well, you know, an ignorant shotgun approach is best when making an empty, self-promoting gesture like this one. Don't want folks to get caught up in the details of exactly how meaningless it is.

Russ and Dee, I've listened to them. VERY few times. I prefer my talk radio with a touch of smarts and a dash of wit, thank you.

Speaking of stupid media circuses -- in this case, the Michael Jackson one -- didn't one of Scrushy's lawyers say the other day that he was heartened by the Michael Jackson verdict?

I didn't hear that, but it certainly wouldn't surprise me.

I just sent the following email to Russ and Dee:
Check out any of the missing persons boards at your local Walmart. I think you'll find that we have quite a few cases that haven't been solved after years much less weeks. Where is this expertise you talk about. Aruba, like the U.S., is not allowed to torture the suspects to get the truth. Give them time and stop embarrassing Alabama. This might be good for Fox's and your ratings, but it damages your already shady journalistic reputation.
Maybe if more people let them know how shameful their comments are. Of course, the more outrageous the view (unless of course it's a liberal one) the more likely Fox will give it air time.

Riding home tonight and heard Dee on the radio get revved up about her little "boycott" to Aruba. Let me tell you as a recent transplant in Alabama, I would have to say that this duo puts us back in the dark ages just when we have got some good luck in bringing foreign auto makers to the state. Dee has little regard for travel agents...trying to make a buck with sending tourists to Aruba, maybe even disdain! Dee- wake up you stupid backwoods rebel! Matter a fact, throw water on the producer or Russ that put her on the air.(Moran) Get this yall...Dee had the audacity to say that Aruba can draw from its other financial sources like it's Drug Trade!!! She actually said that on the air.
Ashamed in Alabama.
