Going South

al.com: NewsFlash - Airbus parent picks four finalists for U.S. factory

Airbus is choosing between four sites, all in the south, including Mobile. The others are Charleston, Kiln, Mississippi (Brett Favre's hometown, and that's all it's known for) and Melbourne, Florida. They won't be building passenger jets, so you don't have to worry about flying in a plane built in Alabama.

Froma Harrop had a good article a few weeks ago about the breaks poor states give industries when they're wooing them.

She starts by talking about the Pacific Research Institute, which does a yearly survey of "business-friendly" states and "gives good grades for low wages, liberty to pollute, and tax policies that let the rich off the hook" (last year Kansas was number one). Oddly enough, however, the Institute itself is in regulation-happy San Francisco.

She goes on to say:

"Perhaps companies are looking for something other than servile state governments. Perhaps they want educated workers. And perhaps educated workers want to live in communities where schools don't worry about teaching evolution science."

Considering this list, perhaps not.

Well, Melbourne is the nearly large town to Cape Canaveral, so they have a pretty educated bunch there. Mobile and Charleston are Navy towns, particularly the latter, I believe. Kiln's the really weird one on the list. For a good laugh, here's the Google Map of the town.

I see what you're saying, but the states themselves are generally more regressive (though Florida can be a wildcard at times).

Yeah, Charleston has a big Navy scene (not that I used to tend bar there and be a favorite among the officers or anything).

"For a good laugh, here's the Google Map of the town" baha...I kept waiting for additional detail or streets to load.

I wasn't going to bother with the map but after your post I just had to. Who would have thought a map could be so amusing.
