Deer in the headlights

" There is one deer for every 2.5 registered vehicles in Alabama - 1.8 million deer and 4.5 million vehicles." You know what that means: collisions. Over the last ten years in Alabama, 49 people have been killed and 2,274 injured in car-on-animal accidents, which are nearly all with deer. The animals don't stick to rural areas -- they'll even run onto I-459 west of Birmingham.

I live 3 miles from interstate 75 and have deer around my house all the time (as well as plenty of deer hunters on the open property about 1/2 mile away).

Never been deer hunting myself, but find them awfully tasty & have quite a few relatives who have had major damage done by running into deer.

I had a small group, three or four of them, show up in the little clearing by my apartment on New Year's of 2003. I was kind of hoping they'd return last year, but they didn't. Maybe this time.

It's just going to get worse, you know. People all over the South are spreading into what had been rural areas, and their houses and residential roads and highways are going to keep being in the deer's way. And since people are more and more living near forested areas (rather than more-or-less tamed areas) the deer aren't getting driven out. And while the human population is up, so is the deer.

"Deer in Headlights" That was the look that Dubya got during the first debate with John Kerry--then it turned to "Embarrased Buck on Hood".
