CNN.com - Asia quake death toll tops 20,000 - Dec 27, 2004
What else is there to say? Except that the death toll from this nightmare has been creeping up over the last day, and will probably go higher still. And that as so often is the case the poorest people are the hardest hit.

I tuned in to CNN last night to get the latest. For the half hour I watched, the sole emphasis was on the plight of (Western) tourists in Thailand, who clearly consistute a small minority of those suffering from the storm's effects. Apparently, the news is only interesting if the people affected look like you.

CNN International might have broader coverage.

The news on BBC America had much more even coverage this morning.

CNN.com's front page has a big picture of a very pale American tourist up top. Who cares about 22,000 dead Asians, compared to "eight Americans, 12 Britons, four Italians and three French"?
