Signs

Seen by the side of the road today...

1. Actual sign defacement, a Kerry/Edwards roadsign with a red "no" symbol drawn on it. Typical Republican class. I went out to the local campaign headquarters for both parties about ten days ago -- I needed material for a display, and it's not like I had to make more than one stop -- and both sides said that they were short, one reason being that signs were being destroyed. I figured it was the usual complaining about dirty tricks, but maybe not.

2. An actual Michael Peroutka/Whoever his running mate is sign. Maybe Roy Moore is in Tuscaloosa.

I endured 5-10 minutes of my retired father (who lives in Tucson) filling me in on the organized destruction of Bush/Cheney signs by "union members paid by a Phoenix millionaire." I came very close to telling him I thought it sounded like a good use of money.

Well, the Democratic volunteers running HQ were mineworkers, for what that's worth. It's not like it even MATTERS. Who cares if Bush wins Alabama with 65 percent or 60 percent?

Yeah, yeah, you liberals complain about the littlest things. As you know, Bush-Cheney signs have also been defaced and destroyed. Those kinds of things happen every election year.

But, more importantly, did you hear about the trouble brewing over Cullman's wet/dry referendum? See my blog for all the details: http://abamablog.blogspot.com

(Sorry about the shameless self-promotion, but hey...I'm new at this.)

We saw several Peroutka signs on our way to the fair this weekend. The kids wanted to know what the Constitution Party was, and there I was chirping away about the criminalization of homosexual behavior ("So people like Mr. Jeff would be put in jail, honey!") with my son's born-again friend in the back seat. Wonder if his parents will let him go anywhere with us again.

Republicans yip and moan that "it's about character" then remove bumper stickers and yard signs, and leave nasty notes to strangers (all of which have happened to me; details here*).

I have plenty of conservative friends/family, and it's never happened to anyone I've asked (though I know it happens). For all this talk about "values", when the rubber meets the road, conservatives play dirty.

*Excuse my shameless self promotion, too :)

BTW: Never have and never would touch another's sticker, yard sign, or leave a note addressing a stranger as an "*sshole."
