More booze, please!
In the ongoing fight against Alabama's religiously-inspired petty repression, one of the more successful battles of late has been for Sunday alcohol sales. It's such a dumb ban that only religion could inspire it. The state's four largest cities, largest county, and a number of smaller municipalities now allow Sunday liquor sales, and a new bill in the legislature would allow more to join them.
26 counties still don't allow any alcohol sales, by the way. Avoid these counties.

They had a similar law in Kansas until I left for college, accept you simply weren't able to buy any alcohol in any place in the state. When I came back I was told that the legislature had made it a local issue, and about 15 minutes after that decision came down, my county legalized alcohol sales on Sunday.
No Alcohol on Sunday is one of those bizarre laws you just have to scratch your head at. I mean, I know there are lots of zealots in Kansas and Alabama, but I would think there would be more people who'd like to be able to run to the local grocery store and pick up a 12 pack.
Hell, my stepfather's a Methodist minister and he laughed at the law.

D'oh. That "accept" should say "except."

I think that the problem is that most people aren't that fired up about it. Those who do care are overwhelmingly the zealots, and they can only be overcome by a monetary argument. Jefferson County only started Sunday liquor sales because the hotel people were complaining that the ban cost convention business.

It's definitely a dumb law, and the only place I ever experienced it was Corpus Cristi, a town I was in for a funeral and to where I planned on never, ever again returning.
You'll have to kidnap me to get me there.

I was once refused alcohol in San Antonio because I had an out of state DL. At least that's what they told me.
I miss the days of inter-county beer runs. In Atmore, where my parents live, Sunday sale is banned, but it's on the Florida line so the "State Line" stores do a booming business on Sundays.

Ah. These days, those stores mostly cater to the lottery trade. Except in Mississippi, where they don't have a lottery but have other forms of gambling and I think they have slot machines or video poker.
