Golden calf

Legal fees in Commandments case could reach $1 million

$1 million spent on Roy Moore's idol, the fate of which was inevitable from the beginning. $1 million from the state's coffers, which are already empty. The state would have to pay legal fees for the private attorneys who sued to get the idol removed. Since they're going to win -- the appeals court will uphold the lower court ruling and the Supremes will refuse to hear the appeal -- they better start planning now.

The $1 million doesn't include the time that state attorneys -- including Pinhead Pryor -- and other government agents have spent defending the idol. Nor does it include how we're probably going to wind up needing the National Guard to get rid of the damned thing when Roy decides that the Constitution doesn't apply to him and refuses to remove it when ordered.

Why not use the money for librarian or teacher salaries? One million would give people a nice small bonus if divided up.

The "bible thumpers" who dreamed this up have been meditating too long with their ass up in the southern baptist baptismal trough.

The state wouldn't have any choice -- by law, they have to pay the legal fees for the plaintiffs if the case goes for them -- and the lawyers need to be paid. So, even less money for teachers and everyone else. Roy claimed that this battle would be paid for entirely by private contributions, but he left that part out.
