Special all-legacy edition: Joe Buck vs. Chip Caray

Joe Buck
(Defeated Bill Raftery 39-11)

The People Speak:

"He sounds like a detestable, unlikable ass in any and all interviews and talk-show appearances." -- Steve Silver

"Joe Buck has so completely tainted his father's legacy, I can't even consider Jack Buck among the greatest announcers of all-time. I mean if he could produce this abortion of an announcer and actually encourage him to get into the business, it raises serious questions about his judgement and ability to teach in the announcement game." -- Chris

"I would say that he deserves to be partnered with a pile of feces called Tim McCarver, except that we're forced to hear both of them then." -- EY

"I think Buck knows that his partner's a complete moron. Every now and then, I think Joe lets it slip that whatever McCarver just said was stupid. Not in so many words, but you can tell that Buck just glanced at McCarver and rolled his eyes. That's the only saving grace he's got going for him." -- Rob K.

Versus

Chip Caray
(Defeated Don Sutton 40-20)

The People Speak:

"He tries to be like Bob Costas and Harry Caray rolled into one and fails terribly. He over dramatises the situation. I bet when he was a kid a paper cut ment a trip to the ER." -- Smitty

"The way he speaks, he should be doing a top 40 countdown some place instead of broadcasting baseball and pretending like he knows anything about it." -- Greg

"This one was hard, but I'm voting for Chip Caray. He's a relentless, ball-less butt-kisser, he's terrible in a team, and he jumps the gun on every play:

*CRACK* Chip: And Furcal hits a blast to right field! (Brian Giles easily catches the ball 20 feet in front of the wall) Chip: And it's caught by Giles, two away.

or:

*CRACK*
Chip: And there's a double play to short off the bat of LaRoche [okay, subtle dig]! And the Braves really wasted this opportunity.
(Jose Reyes airmails the ball past Kaz Matsui into right field, Francoeur scores)
Chip: And that'll be an error on the shortstop Reyes.

Wait to see what happens, dammit! I HATE IT WHEN ANNOUNCERS DO THAT!" -- Jenny

Voting now closed. Results coming soon.

Comments

Caray seems to be beyond horrible from everything that I've read, but since I began avoiding Braves broadcasts on TBS long before Caray joined up I have no frame of reference.

Sadly, I have listened to far more Joe Buck broadcasts than I care to remember. Buck is awful at covering all sports, is a shameless schill for FOX, and yet still seems to delusionally believe that he is some sort of broadcasting legend. Therefore, he gets my vote.

Posted by: Mike at September 21, 2005 10:51 AM

Ross Perot got it wrong: That giant sucking sound is Joe Buck announcing football or baseball on FOX.

Posted by: J. Joe Scott at September 21, 2005 11:15 AM

BUCK SUCKS

my vote is for McCarver

Posted by: Smitty at September 21, 2005 11:20 AM

This is the hardest vote for me yet.

Carey represents the end of the era that is classic Braves announcing (Ernie Johnson, Skip Carey, Pete Van Wieren and to a lesser extent Sutton and Simpson)

Buck hates the Braves

So Buck b/c atleast Carey's heart is in the right place

Posted by: Downtown ATL at September 21, 2005 11:53 AM

Chip Carey. I guess I really don't have the Buck related issues that some of our friends here do.

Posted by: Craig D. Barker at September 21, 2005 11:54 AM

Joe Buck.

Will sell anything Fox tells him to sell. He'll promote anything. He's a pathetic coporate "yes" man riding his no talent ass on his father's coat-tails.

Posted by: Todd at September 21, 2005 12:14 PM

Buck, but only for the reason that Caray's mediocrity is isolated to TBS while Buck's bluster is a featured product on national broadcasts.

Mac, this is tough bracketing. McCarver/Johnson is a clear Clash of the Titans, "Loser Leave Town" cage match kind of thing. Buck v. Caray is clearly an undercard event.

The choice between Buck and Caray is stale tapioca pudding v. castor oil. McCarver v. Johnson is anthrax v. ebola.

I've listened to to both of these announcers more than enough to know that they are both hacks, but Joe Buck is even worse than Tim McCarver, and I'll provide this one of example that left even Tim McCarver aghast at Buck's stupidity:
1998 a pitcher for the Cardinals comes up with a runner on hoping to bunt him over, but bunts into a force out instead:

McCarver: You know that's almost the worst outcome for a pitcher to have in this situation. You fail to advance the runner, get an out, and now your stuck out in the field running on a hot day. That's the punishment they get for failing to lay down a decent bunt.

Buck (eager to jump in like an idiot): Yeah, but for a bunt that bad, the pitcher should not only get punished by having created the out, and now stand out in the heat, but he should also be forced to have a sandbag chained to his leg while he runs the bases, that'll teach him to lay down a bunt properly.

McCarver: Ummmmmm

Buck: Wouldn't that be a good lesson to the pitcher and anyone else who bunts poorly?

McCarver: Well, let's see if the Cardinals can generate a run here.

Chip.

Posted by: Wes Mantooth at September 21, 2005 12:35 PM

I don't see what everybody's big problem with Joe Buck is. I have read these comments and all of the comments on his previous matchup and all you guys seem to come up with is that he's.........bad. That's it? What is bad about him? Everybody has their own reason why they hate Hawk or Chip because they do insanely irritating things but what does Joe Buck do? Maybe someone can elaborate a little bit next time they vote for Buck.

Obviously my vote is for Carey. I don't care if his heart is in the right place. He totally sucks and makes a fine broadcast of Braves' games into intolerable torture.

Posted by: Zach at September 21, 2005 12:37 PM

Chip. Son of Skip. Son of Happy Drunk Who Was Fired For Hitting On Gussie Busch's Wife And Resurrected Career As Happy Drunk Cubs Homer. Just so you young punks know the family history. If Chip is son of Skip, what will be the 4th Generation Carey's name? Great-Grandson of Happy Drunk Who Hit On Gussie Busch's Wife.....?

Posted by: G.E. at September 21, 2005 12:39 PM

I believe the next Carey in line will be named "Slip" or "Dip" Carey. But, enough of my prognostications, I'm voting for Joe Buck. If FOX told him to pull his pants down and kiss his own ass, while plugging a hemorrhoid cream, he'd do it. Then again, he might not have to pull his pants down - 'cause he's all ass.

Posted by: BillH at September 21, 2005 12:45 PM

I like Joe Buck. He has a very dry sense of humor that unfortunately doesn't translate to TV commentating like it does on the radio. BTW his dad had it too. I'm absolutely convinced that McCarver is the reason Buck gets the bad rap he does.
This vote is for Carey although I have very little against him either.

Posted by: Brak at September 21, 2005 01:30 PM

Slamalama...ding dong!

And after that impressive opening, I vote for Chip Carey. Everything is relative. Most of the Braves announcers are very good. I have yet to see a decent MLB FOX announcer. Joe Buck is actually one of the less putrid men they run out there. Chip, on the other hand, looks so bad next to Skip and Pete that I almost feel sorry for him.

And I hate FOX and always will. I hate their playoff coverage, their ASG coverage, their Saturday Game of the Week, etc. Frankly, my expectations could not be lower. But I like TBS and Chip ruins it.

So Chip it is.

Posted by: jenny at September 21, 2005 01:38 PM

Joe Buck is actually decent doing football. I have to vote for Chip Caray.

Posted by: Bell Curve at September 21, 2005 02:18 PM

My vote is for Chip. Living in Chicago, I was subjected to this guy for many years before he was exiled to the Braves. However, in Chicago, Chip realized that he was not supposed to do analysis. That job belonged to the incomparable Steve Stone. With the Braves, for some reason (perhaps thinking that he is channeling Steve Stone), Chip has decided that he can analyze as well as do play-by-play. He can't. Despite being around the game for his whole life, he rarely is insightful. If he'd just stick to calling the game and letting his betters do the analysis, he probably wouldn't even be in this contest.
Joe Buck, on the other hand, calls a good game and he knows when to shut up and let someone with more knowledge (McCarver may be overly verbose, but he does know what he's talking about) do the analysis.

Posted by: DougM at September 21, 2005 02:20 PM

This is a pretty tough one, though I agree that this is an undercard since neither of these two guys makes it much farther.

I guess I'll go with Chip because I watch mostly Braves games, and therefore he has a lot more chances to irritate me. He's just awful when paired with Sutton, and throw in Gant on those Xtra or Xtreme or whatever they call it games, and it just ruins the whole experience.

Posted by: Kirk at September 21, 2005 02:35 PM

This is impossible.

Nepotism vs. Nepotism.

Chip had two generations, Grandpa Harry and Pop Skip. Joe had one generation, Pop Jack.
Edge to Joe.

Joe every once in a while can get through a half inning without making a jackass out of himself. Chip is a complete putz.
Edge to Joe.

Joe does commercials. Chip writes on bathroom walls. Who watches commercials?
Edge to Chip

Joe deals with Dave Duncan. Chip gets Leo Mazzone.
Edge to Chip.

Joe calls Albert Pujols. Chip calls Larry Jones.
BIG Edge to Joe.

Joe resides in St. Louis. Chip dives in Atlanta.
BIG Edge to Chip

Tied 3-3. Tiebreaker.

Joe may, and the jury is still out on this one, be able to think for himself.

Chip cannot think. Period!

Chip Carey is OUT!

Posted by: BristolTiricosWomen at September 21, 2005 02:53 PM

Hmm, in the first round, I abstained a couple of times because I liked the contestants. Can I abstain because I hate both?

Oh screw it, count a vote for Chip. He grates my nerves the most.

Posted by: jay319 at September 21, 2005 03:25 PM

Buck.

Posted by: JeffR at September 21, 2005 03:56 PM

Chip. Even his name says "Nepotism."

Posted by: Rob K. at September 21, 2005 04:07 PM

Caray

I don't watch a whole ton of Braves baseball but when I do, I agree with most of the people here, Chip is awful.

Joe Buck isn't that bad. Aside from the Moss thing I like him a lot when he does football. He does a good job with the play-by-play and is pretty funny. In baseball he does the best he can considering he has to put up with that giant bag of suck McCarver, and he even makes fun of Tim from time to time which always makes me smile. I think he draws a lot of criticism for not being as good as his dad, which is unfair since there will NEVER be another Jack Buck. That's a pretty tough legacy to live up to.

Posted by: Adam at September 21, 2005 04:12 PM

Buck for doing football and baseball. Chip Caray's still only on TBS, right?

Posted by: James G at September 21, 2005 04:43 PM

Chip Caray

Posted by: Bill McCabe at September 21, 2005 05:13 PM

If Scott Van Pelt is a giant, animated penis, then Joe Buck is a living, breathing version of Mr. Peanut.

He's bearable for baseball, but is piss pathetic at football. Also needs to remove the stick that's been lodged up his ass for the past decade.

Buck sux

Posted by: Dave at September 21, 2005 06:29 PM

I like Joe Buck. I'm still waiting for him to push McCarver out of the broadcast booth. They go together like Cartman and Billy from the Family Circus.

This vote is for Caray.

Posted by: varla at September 21, 2005 07:33 PM

Uncle Buck is teh suck.

Chip is a wannabe in the grand scheme of suckitude.

Posted by: Ed at September 21, 2005 07:40 PM

Buck is corporate "yes man" but he also recognizes that and makes subtle jabs at himself. Other than some annoying incidents, I think he's generally a good broadcaster.

I can find nothing redeeming about Caray, so him.

Posted by: TheBentKangaroo at September 21, 2005 08:19 PM

Tough one, but I think I have to go Caray.

Posted by: Yuda at September 21, 2005 08:34 PM

Chip carey

Posted by: JD at September 22, 2005 06:18 AM

Probably it's because I see him too much as I'm a Braves fan, but lets go with Caray.

Posted by: darren at September 22, 2005 08:49 AM

Joe Buck

I feel sorry for Chip because he was never going to be loved in Chicago as much as Harry and the fans hated him.

Buck makes me hate waking up to watch baseball on Saturdays and fotball on Sundays. I finaly lost patience for him with him getting on his moral soapbox during that Moss game. Call the game and leave it at that. If Buck would have just made the call and not gotten all worked up, no one would have really noticed.

Posted by: John at September 22, 2005 11:09 AM

I think Buck is good. He's on TV too much and Fox is always giving him crap to shill, but nothing about him really annoys me. To me he seems to be making fun of himself selling stuff a lot.

This vote's for Caray.

Posted by: John at September 22, 2005 05:21 PM

I don't watch baseball (or much of anything) on TBS, so in the Nepotism Bowl, I go for Buck. The thing about a shill is that even if they make light of being a shill, they're still doing the deed. If he had any balls, he'd tell FOX to get stuffed. Since he doesn't, he gets my vote.

Posted by: aznemesis at September 23, 2005 12:14 AM

Chip gets my vote.

Mainly because there's still hope that Joe Buck will punch McCarver's lights out. Please oh please oh please oh please...

Posted by: Ed K. at September 23, 2005 11:31 AM

Buck for complaining about how long a game of baseball takes. There is no clock in baseball, so why does he always have to point out how long the game has been and what can be done to speed up the game. If he doesn't want to be there, he should leave.

Posted by: bucco at September 23, 2005 12:28 PM

Chip Carey has the intelligence of his grandfather without the charisma
